Can someone please explain to a greenhorn the differences (or direct me to website) in LIVE, TRANSMISSION DRIVEN, AND INDEPENDENT PTOS? And pros and cons of each. Maybe even different categories... I am planning on doing some brush hogging, light loader work, tilling of gardens, and possible get a post hole digger too.

transmission pto=drives off of transmission. when one steps on clutch power to pto stops. momentum of pto equipment will drive tractor ahead if in gear when clutch is stepped on unless an overrunning clutch is installed between pto & equipment. to switch gears pto most stop unless one has a powershift transmissionlive pto= operation is controlled through a two stage clutch operated with the foot clutch. when pedal is half way up pto is engaged, all the way up transmission is engaged also. one can switch gears with out disengaging pto independent pto= operation is controlled by a seperate clutch lever so pto can be started & stopped without stopping movement of tractor hope this helps ,if you have more questions feel free to contact me. ....

If you meant tiller work for your gardens (as opposed to plow & disk), a two stage or an independant pto might be your best bet. You can stop the movement of the tractor to let the tiller spend time to dig at a tough spot. 'Can't do that with a single stage clutch pto as everything comes to a stop. Due to the safety issue, most modern tractors have a overrunning clutch built into their transmissions if they have a single stage clutch. The question is worth asking though. I also find a two stage handy for bush hogging for similar reasons, but you can get satisfactory results with a single stage clutch too. Lee ....

(another greenhorn here, probably asking stupid question) Is the type of pto affected by having a hydrostat transmission? Can I assume that pto would be independent since there is no transmission clutch? ....

Thanks for the insight. I would like to be able to back up to a flowerbed, drop tiller, and till away. I am right now looking at both Kubota L2500 and Kioti L2554. Both have a single stage overrunning clutch. Now what does overrunning mean?By the way, how does one run a post hole digger with a single stage clutch? ....

BillI'm not for sure about the post hole digger and single stage clutch. However, overrunning means that the power of a spinning implement (like a mower) will not push the tractor forward, as if it were in gear, when you depress the clutch. Consider it a safety feature. Lee ....

To use post hole digger with single stage clutch, take transmission out of gear, engage pto lever, then release clutch ....
